Module
I: Crisis of Empire and Regional Power Shifts:
The crisis of the
Mughal Empire, starting from 1707 onwards, examining the later Mughals, their
polity, economy, and society, the Sikh and Maratha polity, and the
disintegration of the Mughal Empire.
Module
II: The Arrival and Expansion of European Powers:
The coming of the
Europeans, focusing on chartered companies the British, Portuguese, and French
the expansion of European trade, and the English East India Company and its
expansion in India.
Module
III: Economic Transformation under Colonial Influence:
Land revenue
settlements Ryotwari and Mahalwari-commercialization of agriculture, and
deindustrialisation.
Module
IV: Socio-Religious Reform Movements and Educational Policies:
The Brahmo Samaj,
Poona Sarvajanik Sabha, and the Wahabi Movement; debates around the Bengal
Renaissance, including Rammohun Roy, Derozio and the Young Bengal, Vidyasagar,
and Macaulay's Minutes on Education.

V: Popular Resistance to Colonial Rule:
Popular
resistance to colonial rule, focusing on peasant and tribal responses-Chuar
Rebellion, Kol Rebellion, Wahabi Movement, Farazi Movement, and the Santhal
Rebellion.
Module
VI: The Revolt of 1857:
causes, events,
and consequences and Nature.
